Skills Assessment

An assessment of a visa applicant's qualifications and (sometimes) work experience is known as a skills assessment, and can be required in many employer sponsored visa applications. Even if a skills assessment is not required by the Department of Immigration, including such a classification with a visa application can provide comfort to an assessing case officer, which in turn can "oil the wheels" of the application process.

Skills assessments are administered by a diverse range of regulatory bodies including the Australian Computer Society, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Australian Institute of Management, and Trades Recognition Australia.

Each assessing body has its own set of criteria and documentary requirements. These requirements can range from simply providing evidence of qualifications attained, to proving detailed documentary evidence of previous work experience, to having to attend classes and pass examinations in Australia.

You can review details of the assessing body for each skilled occupation by reviewing Department of Immigration form 1121i
